DFBonSi-Distributed FeedBack Lasers Grown Directly on Silicon

  • DFBonSi addresses the challenge of integrating efficient light sources on silicon for silicon photonics by fabricating single-mode distributed feedback (DFB) lasers using InAs/GaAs quantum dot active media grown directly on silicon substrates. The project aims to fabricate narrow ridge-waveguide lasers and demonstrate the first single-mode DFB lasers on this material platform using high-duty-cycle etched semiconductor gratings. This work is conducted through an individual research fellowship.

  • We are responsible for the entire device fabrication process. We apply a novel method developed for laterally coupled DFB lasers to the new material system. Our tasks include modeling the lasers, optimizing electron beam lithography and etching processes, and performing detailed material characterization, such as Cross-Sectional Scanning Tunneling Microscopy/Spectroscopy (X-STM/STS). We also undertake training in MBE growth and engage in teaching and supervision.
