CO₂FUELS: A Circular and Integrated System for Renewable Hydrogen and Advanced Biofuels Production

  • CO₂FUELS delivers a breakthrough modular system that captures CO₂ and converts it into renewable hydrogen and advanced biofuels such as bio-oil, hexanol, and biomethane. Using metallic scrap iron–based CO₂ capture with in-situ hydrogen generation and algae cultivation, the process integrates biochemical, hydrothermal, and catalytic pathways for maximum efficiency and circularity. Powered partly by renewables and operating under mild conditions, CO₂FUELS avoids costly electrolysis, reduces material use, and enables scalable, low-carbon fuel production for transport, industry, and power sectors—advancing Europe’s net-zero transition.

  • K. P. INNOSERV plays a pivotal role in ensuring the scientific precision and credibility of the CO₂FUELS project. We are responsible for conducting advanced X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analyses to characterise the crystalline phases of metallic iron, catalysts, and biochar across multiple processes, directly informing process optimisation and catalyst regeneration strategies. Additionally, we will carry out high-accuracy CO₂ measurements to monitor capture efficiency, conversion rates, and emissions performance, providing critical validation data for the project’s key performance indicators. Beyond these core tasks, we will support specialised analytical campaigns—including structural and compositional assessments—that enable robust Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) inputs and accelerate the translation of laboratory breakthroughs to industrial-scale deployment. By delivering precise, timely, and actionable data, KPINNOSERV ensures that each technological pathway within CO₂FUELS is grounded in verifiable scientific evidence, strengthening the project’s innovation credibility and market readiness.
